Park is a young Korean-American painter
with an unusually expressive style. He paints with a kinetic energy,
rapidly applying daubs of color to the canvas. Park prefers to work
from life, painting in the "alla prima" style whereby
an artist works from beginning to end without allowing the paint
to dry. He concentrates on painting the figure because he finds
it the foremost challenge. Despite
his expressive way of working, Park an exceptional ability to achieve
a likeness. He is highly observant and consequently
adept at capturing not only the appearance, but the personality
and gestures of his subject. Park was born in Seoul, Korea in 1975
and he emigrated to the United States with his parents at the age
of ten. He graduated from La Canada High School and then enrolled
at Art Center College of Design. The program there gave him a thorough
grounding in drawing and painting, and since then he has worked
consistently from life, honing his skills. Park was featured in
Southwest Art's "21 Under 31" issue this October.
