Soren-Emil Carlsen, N.A. (1853-1932)
"Moonlight"

Oil on Canvas
Signed and dated 1918, lower right

"Moonlight" is a masterpiece of American Marine painting by Soren-Emil Carlsen, one of the nation's most important early-20th-century masters. This subtle work shows the summer moon already high in the sky, while the light of day is still apparent. Although he is probably better known today for his moody still lifes, early in the century Carlsen was an acknowledged master of marine painting, and his poetic descriptions of sea and sky were purchased by many American museums. Related works are in the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Emil Gruppe (1900-1976)
"Cresting Waves"
10" x 14"
Oil on Board
Signed lower right, c. 1945

This beautiful small plein-air study depicts a curling, white-capped wave just as it breaks on the shore. During his long and productive career, Gruppe painted hundreds of these spontaneous studies, out of dorrs, in the elements. With the relentless action of the ocean, the subtle layers of overcast visible in the distance, and the crisp palette the artist used, "Cresting Waves" is an excellent example of Gruppe's plein-air painting.

This rocky coastal scene depicts a wave crashing against the coast. Emil Gruppe, a second-generation painter who grew up in the art colonies of Europe, was a legendary plein-air painter and teacher, and his books on painting are highly sough-after by artists all over America. Here he has captured the awesome power of the waves as they crash on the rocks, while the coastal headlands are just visible through an enveloping mist.

Frederick Judd Waugh, N.A. (1861-1940)
"Ebbing Waters"
30" x 36"
Oil on Canvas

Frederick Judd Waugh was a legendary marine painter and an artistic institution. He was so popular that he won the "People's Choice" award at the prestigious Annual Exhibition at the Carnegie Museum for five years in a row. Waugh was thoroughly trained and very versatile, but he loved the sea, and his oeuvre consists overwhelmingly of marine paintings. This work, with its emphasis on the brillianty sky, marks a dramatic departure for the artist. While Waugh usually concentrated on the action of the ocean, in this work he has created a brilliant design out of the sky, with dominant horizontal clouds and slashing vertical lines.
